MARYLAND SCHOOLS
& STUDENTS
Maryland has over 1,400 public schools in 24 local education
agencies serving all of the state’s 23 counties plus Baltimore
City. Over the last 10 years, enrollment has increased by 3 percent.
In school year 2025-26, over 890,000 students are enrolled in
Maryland public schools from Pre-K to high school.
With a student population that consists of 32.3% Black/African American
students, 31.4% White students, 23.7% Hispanic/Latino students, and 6.8%
Asian students, Maryland’s student population is becoming increasingly
diverse.
In addition to the growing diversity in race/ethnicity, enrollment trends
show an increase in the percentage of students who are Economically
Disadvantaged and living in concentrated poverty. Maryland’s student
population also includes 14% of students who are Multilingual Learners and
13% who are Students with Disabilities.
