From Classroom to Control Room: Seneca Valley HVAC Students Tackle
Real Building Systems
Seneca Valley’s HVAC program has experienced significant growth over the past
four years, with students consistently applying classroom learning to real-world
challenges. Using the MCPS building automation system, students actively
diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair heating and cooling issues throughout the
school. During the 2024325 school year alone, students resolved 30 HVAC-related
issues4ranging from replacing broken belts to restore classroom comfort to
identifying and correcting a critical problem with the school’s main chiller,
preventing a building-wide shutdown. This authentic, hands-on experience
strengthens technical skills while making a measurable impact on the school
environment.
