Powering Up: How One Teacher Transformed Diesel Education
Washington County Public Schools’ Diesel Mechanics program underwent a remarkable
turnaround after the mid-year hiring of Mr. Daniel Laing, an industry professional who quickly
embraced teaching. Within just days, he transformed a disengaged student culture into one
energized by hands-on learning, filling an empty shop with diesel rigs and reestablishing strong
industry connections.
Mr. Laing expanded partnerships with local farmers, giving students real-world experience on
diesel trucks and tractors. His community outreach also resulted in a major donation4a
$24,000 2016 Peterbilt tractor from the Pete Store in Hagerstown, arriving in April to serve as a
new student lab.
Student engagement and program applications have surged, positioning the Diesel Mechanics
program as a model of excellence in CTE in Washington County and across Maryland.
